Permission to submit an Expression of Interest to the Environment Agency seeking funding to manage Coastal Adaptation at Cowbar, Staithes

Decision Maker: Assistant Director - Resources (Environment), Corporate Director of Environment

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

The submission of an Expression of Interest (EoI) for £70,000 from Environment Agency’s Coastal Adaptation Programme to undertake a range of studies to continue to monitor the cliff instability at Cowbar, Staithes is approved, subject to acceptable terms and conditions being received.

Reasons for the decision:

As Risk Management Authority, North Yorkshire Council, under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, is required to act in a manner that is consistent with the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy. Adaptation planning to mitigate coastal erosion risk fulfils that duty.

Alternative options considered:

Should the EOI not be submitted, the cliff monitoring will cease upon expiry of the current programme.
