Award a contract for the strengthening of Barton Footbridge under NEC4 ECC on the CECF 2026 Civils Lot Two Framework. Evaluation of Tender was on a price only basis. Contract is awarded to PBS Construction (northeast) Limited for tender price of £117,536.
The footbridge needs significant maintenance and will continue to suffer degradation in its current form. Strengthening is a more cost-effective solution. The aim is to replace existing fill above arches with concrete and resurfacing whole footbridge. A new wooden parapet is proposed to replace the existing. This scheme will significantly reduce future maintenance.
The following options (and option variations) were considered at pre-options stage:
Option 1 - essentially do nothing
Option 2 – general maintenance (Rectification of the defects found in Inspection Report)
Option 3 - take down, rebuild three spans and rectification of other defects.
Option 4 – full demolition and Construct New Structure same as previous. Not possible due to the Grade II listing of the structure.
