Petition to Stop the Proposed Housing Development at Colburn Grange, Near Catterick Garrison

We the undersigned petition the Council to We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Colburn, Catterick Garrison, and the surrounding communities, strongly oppose the proposed housing development by Keyland on approximately 20.8 hectares of agricultural land at Colburn Grange. This proposal threatens to permanently damage our community, environment, and quality of life.

Our objections:
1. Lack of Infrastructure:
Our local infrastructure is already under significant strain. The A6136 is heavily congested, particularly at peak times, and additional housing will only worsen traffic problems, increase pollution, and make our roads less safe for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
2. Insufficient Local Services:
Local schools, GP surgeries, and dental practices are already at or beyond capacity. Introducing hundreds of new residents without significant investment in services will further stretch already-limited resources and reduce the quality of care and education for existing residents.
3. Loss of Agricultural Land and Landscape:
The site at Colburn Grange is productive agricultural land that forms part of the area’s rural character and landscape heritage. Once lost, this land cannot be replaced.
4. Wildlife and Environmental Concerns:
The area supports a variety of wildlife and natural habitats that would be destroyed or severely disrupted by large-scale development. Building here would erode the natural green buffer that separates communities and harms biodiversity.
5. Unsustainable Growth:
North Yorkshire should prioritise sustainable, well-planned development that enhances existing communities — not unchecked expansion that ignores infrastructure limits, environmental value, and local opinion.

We therefore call on North Yorkshire Council to:
• Reject any outline or full planning application for housing development at Colburn Grange.
• Protect agricultural land and green spaces from inappropriate development.
• Ensure that any future housing proposals are sustainable, community-led, and supported by proper infrastructure and local services.

?

We urge the Council to listen to residents and protect the rural character, environment, and wellbeing of our community.
