Accessible Play for All: Inclusive Play Equipment in Scarborough Parks

We the undersigned petition the Council to Install accessible play equipment in at least one local park in Scarborough. At present, there are no fully accessible play equipment, meaning children and adults with physical disabilities are excluded from outdoor play that others enjoy. Inclusive play is a right, not a luxury, and is essential for social development, confidence, and community participation. By supporting this petition, you can help ensure that all children, regardless of ability, can play together safely and equally, in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Scarborough and District Mencap’s Service Users Forum are seeking your support for our ongoing petition calling for accessible play equipment to be installed in at least one of our local parks.

At present, there are no accessible play equipment anywhere in the Scarborough area. This means children and adults with physical disabilities are unfairly excluded from outdoor play that other members of the community can enjoy freely.

We believe that every member of our community should be able to enjoy public spaces equally, and that accessible equipment is an essential step toward genuine inclusion, in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Current Situation:
Schools with children with additional needs: 136 children attend Woodlands Academy and 96 children attend Springhead School. Many others attend mainstream schools, meaning hundreds of local children currently have no access to fully inclusive play equipment.

Existing accessible playgrounds: Only South Cliff Gardens is partially accessible, offering ramps, a wheelchair-accessible sandpit, and a quiet area. Other parks lack fully inclusive facilities.

Key Campaign Points:
High local need: Hundreds of children with disabilities lack access to inclusive play.

Policy support: Local council documents explicitly support improving accessibility in play areas.

Gap in provision: Very few parks currently have fully inclusive equipment; specific commitments are needed.

Opportunity: Align the campaign with Pride in Place funding and Local Plan objectives to create new inclusive play spaces.

We are calling on the council to make inclusive play standard practice, ensuring all children, regardless of ability, can enjoy safe, stimulating, and welcoming public play areas.

We are asking the council to:
Install inclusive play equipment in all local parks.
Ensure future park developments consider accessibility for all children.
Make inclusive play standard practice, in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Every child deserves the chance to play and belong - together, we can make that a reality.
