Pedestrianisation And Outside Seating Of Grape Lane

We the undersigned petition the Council to Implement a daily road closure on Grape Lane, Whitby, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. This will effectively pedestrianize the street during daytime hours to improve pedestrian safety, ensure inclusivity for wheelchair users, and enable local businesses to responsibly offer outdoor seating.

Grape Lane is currently classified as a road, allowing vehicular traffic during peak daytime hours.

We strongly believe this poses a significant safety risk to pedestrians navigating this historic and busy street. By restricting vehicle access from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the council can create a much safer and more welcoming environment for locals and visitors alike.

Crucially, daytime pedestrianization would solve a major accessibility issue. Many venues on Grape Lane occupy historic, listed buildings with narrow doorways that unfortunately prevent wheelchair users from entering. By allowing venues to safely provide outdoor seating, these patrons would finally be able to visit and enjoy all the establishments on the street, ensuring equal access and inclusivity for everyone.

Furthermore, allowing patrons to sit outside in the sunshine would greatly support local independent businesses and enhance the vibrant atmosphere of Whitby.

We understand the council may have concerns regarding potential noise or public disruption. However, all venues on Grape Lane share a steadfast commitment to curbing antisocial behaviour. We will ensure that outdoor seating areas are managed properly and respectfully, guaranteeing they will not become a nuisance to the community.

We urge the council to support local commerce, champion accessibility, preserve the spirit of our town, and prioritize public safety by approving this daytime closure.
