Petition To Make Kirkgate and Finkle Street Knaresborough Residents Only

We the undersigned petition the Council to designate the parking on Finkle Street and Kirkgate, Knaresborough, as residents-only.

Due to the close proximity of these streets to the town centre, they are frequently used by commuters and visitors utilising parking discs. This significantly reduces the availability of parking for residents, many of whom are often unable to park near their own homes.

The current provision is insufficient for the number of households entitled to permits. The average modern vehicle measures approximately 4.4 metres in length. Kirkgate provides roughly 64.8 metres of total parking space—equating to a maximum of around 14 cars when parked bumper-to-bumper, and fewer when allowing for necessary manoeuvring space. Finkle Street provides space for approximately 5 vehicles. Together, the two streets can therefore accommodate a maximum of around 19 vehicles.

However, more than 30 properties across Finkle Street and Kirkgate are eligible for permits. This fundamental imbalance, combined with the increasing use of the streets by non-residents, has created a challenging and often distressing situation for those living locally, including residents with mobility or health issues who rely on close access.

Knaresborough already provides ample parking for non-residents in Castle Yard, Chapel Street, Conyngham, Fisher Street and York Place car parks, offering a combined capacity of approximately 769 spaces—all within easy walking distance of the town centre. These facilities offer a more appropriate alternative for visitors than limited residential streets.

We therefore urge the Council to consider this petition not simply as a matter of convenience, but as an essential step toward ensuring fair, reasonable and safe access for residents.
