Consultation on enabling Remote Attendance and Proxy Voting at Local Authority Meetings

Decision Maker: Executive Member for Corporate Services

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

The response to the Government consultation on “Enabling Remote Attendance and Proxy Voting at Local Authority Meetings” has been provided to support giving Local Authorities the flexibility to allow remote meetings.

Reasons for the decision:

It is important to ensure that councils have the option and flexibility to use the remote and hybrid meetings where they choose to do so. Therefore the Council has responded positively to the consultation to potentially allow remote meetings as identified in Appendix 1 of the attached report.

This is the response to the consultation and any changes would require a Government decision and changes to the legislation.

Alternative options considered:

The Council could choose not to respond or could choose not to support remote meetings and support proxy voting. Following the cross party discussions at the Member Working Group on the Constitution, these alternative options have not been followed and the response in Appendix 1 has been agreed.
