Department for Education (DfE) - Skills Boot Camp Funding Application and Acceptance

Decision Maker: Executive Member for Open to Business

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

For the Executive Member - Open to Business, after consultation with the Corporate Director - Business and Environmental Services (BES) and Corporate Director - Strategic Resources (SR) to authorise the submission for funding on behalf of York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to the Department for Education (DfE) for Skills Bootcamps.
Should the bid be successful and after consultation with the Corporate Director - BES, Corporate Director - SR and the Assistant Chief Executive (Legal and Democratic Services) to delegate authority to the Corporate Director - SR to accept the DfE funding.

Decision:

To accept the offer of grant funding from the Department for Education (DfE) to support delivery of a 1-year (April 2023 to March 2024) Skills Bootcamp programme in York and North Yorkshire at a total amount of £2,603,161, subject to a review of the DfE Grant Offer, and confirmation that the terms and conditions of the grant funding are acceptable to the County Council.

Reasons for the decision:

To maximise the opportunity to access Department for Education funding into the York and North Yorkshire area for delivery of Skills Bootcamps training programmes. The programme aims to support adults to acquire “in-demand” skills, to help them access local job opportunities with higher wages. Much of the programme activity will be based on local skills gaps linked to job vacancies to meet local employer needs

Alternative options considered:

Do nothing or smaller scale programme rejected, as the proposed programme is based on known local demand for the relevant skills training programmes that can be supported by this programme
