Winter Gritting Route Requests and Proposed Changes in advance of 24/25 Season

Decision Maker: Corporate Director of Environment

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

Consideration of requests for additions, deletions or other amendments to the winter gritting routes.

Decision:

Amendments to the current winter maintenance service in line with the Council’s Policy and uniformity of service across the county, as detailed in the report, are approved except the request number 8 in Area 6.

Officers come back to a future meeting after reviewing their recommendation on route 8 in Area 6 with respect to whether the route could be added, leading to some efficiencies in the gritting in this location, plus whether it could be considered for pre-salting in advance of difficult weather conditions. Officers should also discuss the nature of the route with North Yorkshire Highways to understand their concerns over the safety of the route in severe winter conditions.

Reasons for the decision:

The recommendations are put forward in order for the Authority to appropriately deal with the requests received for alterations to our gritting routes.

Alternative options considered:

There are no alternative options that can be considered as treating the highway network, so far as is reasonably practicable, to prevent the formation of hazards created by ice or snow is a statutory duty of the Local Highway Authority.
