We, the undersigned, are concerned about road safety on The Bailey in Skipton, particularly on the stretch leading to and from the bypass.
The Bailey has developed into a residential area, with housing now situated along both sides of the road extending towards the bypass. Despite this, traffic continues to travel at speeds that are inappropriate for a residential setting. This creates a significant risk to pedestrians and cyclists, especially children and other vulnerable road users.
There are currently insufficient safety measures in place to allow pedestrians to cross safely or to ensure vehicles travel at speeds suitable for the area. As the number of residents and pedestrians has increased, so too has the need for improved road safety infrastructure. There is no safe crossing for people to walk or cycle between Cornerfields and the town centre, or between Cornerfields and the Regents Estate. There has already been one accident on this road, and we are concerned that there will be further accidents.
Residents on Cornerfields are concerned and are prompting this petition; many residents have already contacted the council and local councillors to ask for further action to ensure this road is safe.
We urge the Council to prioritise this matter before another serious accident occurs by:
- Introducing a 30mph speed limit on The Bailey, from Skipton to the bypass (for the whole length of The Bailey).
- Creating a clearly marked pedestrian crossing from Cornerfields to the Regents estate (such as a zebra crossing or signal-controlled crossing) or better still a Toucan crossing that would provide for cyclists using the shared path through Cornerfields.
These measures would help reduce vehicle speeds, improve
pedestrian safety, and better reflect the residential nature of the
area.
